Dad, where is Grandpa right now?

Raviscerator : Ecce homo - insanus [userpic]

First of all, pardon the bad lousy pun, but towards the end of a workday, I'm not exactly terribly inventive..
Now, this one latest post idea came as a response to [info]inspirethoughts 's post about her experience with Oreos.
That brings about my own experiences with food, people and people talking about food.

OK.. I guess it's food confession time..

Ice Cream/ Milk

OK.. So, I haven't eaten ice cream in 20+ years (Considering I'm 26, that seems to be a big deal to many..). Now don't ask me why I don't like ice cream. I just don't.. Probably has to do with the fact that I haven't drunk milk in about the same time. Now THAT I guess I can explain. Sorta. While still a kid, till my first grade, we were made forced to drink one whole glass of *raw* boiled milk, no sugar, no added flavorings, every damn day.. I guess that's when I grew to get disgusted with milk. I still cannot stand the smell of raw milk. I still gag at the smell. Sure, it might just be a psychological thing, but I guess I'm ok with it.

And honestly, I don't miss ice cream. After having been without it for most of my life, I guess I don't remember it well enough to miss it.. That, and I can't stand the taste or smell of vanilla. (insert kink joke here)

Oreos

So, I hadn't eaten Oreos till I came to the US. Growing up in India, we had all sorts of cream-filled biscuits cookies, which I grew up eating, all right, but no Oreos. And even after I tried it in the US, I didn't really enjoy it. Probably the vanilla flavoring had something to do with it. Or the fact that I can't won't do the whole Oreos n Milk thingy. So I guess I'll have to find some non-vanilla Oreos and give them a try sometime..

Peanut Butter

Again, I guess it must be a cultural thing. Every person I know, who grew up in the US, seems to like love worship peanut butter. And again, with the Indian background as an excuse, I'll admit to not growing up with the whole PB-J sammich experience. And after lots of pushing and prodding from a few PB-worshipping folk, who convinced me that I had missed out on a near-religious experience, I gave in to them.
I tried a spoonful of peanut butter. And some more.
Honestly, I really didn't get the whole thing. For one, the peanut butter sticking to the roof of my mouth annoyed me to no end. I guess, as a kid, trying to lick it off all day can be a fun experience, but I guess I'm kinda obsessive about things like that..
And you can go ahead and scream about blasphemy, but I didn't really enjoy the taste or the texture (chunky AND smooth.. I tried both). Go figure. No, I don't have any nut-allergies, or hate peanuts.. I just didn't care for it..

Edit : Dr.Pepper

Guess THAT is an acquired taste. First time I tasted Dr. Pepper, I managed to gulp down my first sip. And forced down my second one. The third one, I'm sorry to say, made me spew. The fourth one never came.. I ended up tossing the rest of the bottle into a trashcan and moving on.
I guess I've been a wuss and haven't really given it another try.. YET

I guess I have some more food-obsessions/idiosyncracies, but these were the biggest sacrielges (according to some anyway)..
More later!

I know.. I know.. It's been a week since I posted the previous entry, and honestly, my brain's already started to do the obligatory defrag-and-clear-out-the-unused-icons thingy. So, I better start writing all I can remember, before I forget most of them.
So, here goes.. The NYC Subway system.

The Subway system could effectively, be called the lifeline of many major cities around the world. This certainly would be very apt in case of NYC, where a very small percentage of people actually own/operate personal vehicles. A large number of people use the Metro system, which basically comprises of the subway train system and the buses.

And for a casual visitor or a tourist, the subway system is the best way to get around the city. All you need is a Subway Map, the ability to read maps, and a Metro pass. Now, the maps are available, free of cost, at most places, including airports, restaurants, motels, etc.
As for the Metro Passes, they are rather inexpensive, the unlimited ride-daily passes working out to around $8 a day. Not bad at all, considering a ride on the bus is $2.25 (currently), with you requiring to carry the exact change *in quarters*. Now, unless you enjoy walking around the place, pockets jingling with loose change, buying a Metro Card, which allows you to swipe your way into the subway stations or the buses makes a lot of sense.

Now, the best part about the system is that you don't need to pull out your card and flash it to the driver/officer/guard or anyone else. There's no punching holes in the card, no tearing stubs off.. Just swipe at one place and you're all set. VERY Convenient.

Now, for the subway stations.. You can find a subway station at pretty much any part of the town. Most often at the intersections of roads, some very close to the famous landmarks or the busy areas. Now, once inside the station, you see throngs of people milling around, waiting for their rides. A large cross section of the populace, varying in age, race, economic status.. Torn sneakers to Gucci shoes (does Gucci make shoes?), Salvation Army gear to Armani suits (ok.. Maybe not Armani.. But I can't tell a jacket from a coat.. So don't judge me..).. You get the idea..

The trains are not too long apart, and you can catch the train you are waiting for, within a few minutes. The trains run all through the night too.. So if you are working or partying late.. No problem.. You still can get across the city any time.
As for the stations, as you can expect, they are all not exactly pristine and sparkling clean.. You do have the assorted trash thrown on the tracks, the spit stains on the walls, assorted rodents running around the corridors, darting between people's feet, eliciting screams from the ones not used to them, the assorted ads and promo posters on the walls, the rank smell of sweat  and urine, and of course, the graffiti on the walls. But still, in the end, there is still a sense of order, and it is not altogether totally unpleasant. Some of the subway stations have artistic murals, mosaic creations on their walls (the 81st St one , below the Natural History Museum, for example), which bring about a sense of art amidst the grime and chaos.

And there is always the often-exhilarating thundering noise, the vibrations, The blur of tonnes of metal shells carrying people inside, and the rush of air whenever a train rushes by the station. I guess you can get used to that after a while, but it still gives a tiny surge of adrenaline. It did to me, anyway.

And of course, there are the performers. The homeless artists performing in the stations, the lone blind man playing a sad note on his saxophone, or a couple of men drumming on the subway train,an occasional old guy singing the blues, a cap or a box or a makeshift container on the ground near their feet, hoping some passers by might drop some money there, or at least pause for a few minutes and listen to them.It is kinda sad if you pause to think about them, but in the end, you need to move on, I guess..

The 42nd St station, below Times Square, among certain other key subway stations, has a spot , which, every weekend, has amateur/semi-professional/small time artists or bands performing for the people. Whenever there is a performer, there are lots of people who pause and listen to them for a few minutes. The music can range anywhere from jazz to rock and instrumental pieces. And every saturday, sometime late afternoons, The Meetles, a Beatles cover band show up, play a few of The Beatles' classic numbers, to a growing crowd of fans, to some good applause. And they are pretty good too! I guess you could call some of them a New York landmark. Heh.

I guess I had more to talk about the subways, but I can't remember what, at the moment. Guess I'll start working on my next post soon..

All of these are from The Times of India, 26 October 09:

1.  Mumbai: A 46-year-old woman committed suicide at night by hanging herself from a ceiling fan with the help of a stole because of poor academic performance of her daughter. She was very upset since she saw her mark sheet in the afternoon.

2. Lucknow: A contract killer killed an elderly man (who was in his eighties and had a property of INR 2,500,000 or USD 50,000) by strangling him for just INR 150 (about USD 3), because the heir of the elderly man (who needed money for treatment of epilepsy of his wife) could not afford to give the killer more money.

3.  Moscow: More than 1,000 mourners, mainly burly men, wearing black leather jackets and chunky gold chains and representing various gangs from Russia, gathered to pay their last respects to Vyacheslav Ivankov, Russia's most notorious crime boss, who finally succumbed to the injuries he received in an attempt to his life in July. The scene seemed to have come straight out of The Godfather

4. New Delhi: A software engineer was late for his flight. He called the airline thrice and requested to reschedule his ticket, but his requests were declined. Then, he called again and said that a bomb had been planted on the flight. He reached ten minutes late for the flight, which was delayed by three hours; still, he could not board it because he was tracked and arrested for the hoax call.

If you've heard it before sorry, it gives me a giggle anyway...

Two zebras are talking and one asks the other, "Am I black with white stripes or white with black stripes?" The other replies, "Well I don't
know. You should pray to God about that and ask him." So that night he did and God replied,
"You are what you are."
The next day he said to the other zebra, "I still don't understand what I am because God just said, You are
what you are."
The second zebra responds, "You must be white with black stripes or else God would have said, Yo is what yo is."

I know that smell!! Explored.

Tiger in Flehmen pose

Tigers to identify his territory, the male marks trees by spraying of urine and anal gland secretions, as well as marking trails with scat. Males show what is called called the Flehmen response. In the Flehmen response, animals draw back their lips in a manner that makes them appear to be “grimacing”. The action, which is adopted when examining scents left by other animals either of the same species or of prey, helps expose the vomeronasal organ and draws scent molecules back toward it. This behavior allows animals to detect scents, for example from urine, of other members of their species or clues to the presence of prey. Flehming allows the animals to determine several factors, including the presence or absence of estrus, the physiological state of the animal, and how long ago the animal passed by.

I always do this -- I go through old entries on this journal and it never fails to overwhelm me. My life has been touched by so many people. I've made so many friends. It's crazy! It's good!

I have lost touch with many of you. I know most of you don't even check your LJs anymore. But I just wanted to tell you, that I still think of all of you. If you ever read this entry, drop me a line, and let me know you're doing well. I'd love to hear from you!
