I should actually write Rafcalfs as Charlie would say!!

What would be recipe for a “good cinema”. Something that entertains yet makes you think, keeps you on the edge of your seat and yet relaxes you. End result – you come out of the theater humming “Dhan ta nan’ na na na na.

A friend remarked that he found Kaminey to be very violent – my take is, we live in violent times. However, I prefer the violence shown in Kaminey to the dark, and extremely depressing torture shown in a film like NewYork (and even in the movie Khuda ke liye). The violence in Kaminey is a mockery whereas the ones shown in Newyork and Khuda ke liye a reality.

Review: Barah Anna – Worth every Anna.

Barah Aana

Monday evening on my way back from the opthal, on an impulse we were browsing music when we came across the DVD of “Barah Aana” – Naseeruddin Shah as one of the lead actors definitely helped our decision to pick it up. We settled to watch the movie post dinner and quiet liked the turns the movie takes. That it had no songs was a big plus. Naseeruddin Shah as usual was superb but so were the other two actors, Arjun Mathur and Vijay Raaz.

Small plot, fast pace, a 97 minute movie – works well for a working day evening watch.

Sangita is a friend who shares my love for poetry and was one of the very few readers of my early writings. When she visited my site yesterday, she wanted to know as to why have I not published any of my new Hindi poetry here – I promised her I will and here it is -

अपने रिसते हुए घावों की तरफ मत देखो
उनके बहते हुए मोती समेटो पहले

वो टपके तो ये जख्म तारी होंगे
वो डूबे तो ले डूबेंगे सब कुछ

दर्द की तराशी हुइ है यह जिन्दगी
कुछ और दुख से न बिखर जाएगी

उनका दर्द कर सको तो कम कर लो
उनकी मुस्कुराहटों से ये जीस्त बहल जाएगी

Straight

Straight

Bought the “Straight” DVD for Sunday afternoon viewing as the cast looked promising . I did not have any expectations from the movie but it surprised me with some real good editing and direction techniques. One technique I particularly liked was dropping of a truck in front of the moving car to show the transition between London to India…

The movie is not really racy, but its a light flick -so it serves the purpose. Subject of the move is bold/controversial/taboo which speaks for the A certificate from censor board..

Vinay Pathak as Pinu, the protagonist has done some good work – but then he is a fine actor and nothing less can be expected of him. Gul Panag looks ravishing, the dimples on her cheeks particularly cute, has done a great job of her somewhat limited role. She has lovely husky voice that sounds very sincere as she delivers her dialogues.

Pinu Patel (Vinay Pathak) is a London based restaurateur and owns Gaylord, which serves Indian cuisine. A simple man with tiny complexities in life such as being a virgin and his to be wife running away from the marriage pendal (he goes to India to get married) makes him doubt his self worth. An introvert, he has a nagging aunt, an uncle and a cousin (Rajat) who is a friend. He returns from India and lies about his marital status and tells everyone that his wife will join him later.

Second Foundation - Nitpicks

I am perhaps one of the last of "my era" reading Asimov's Foundation series. Finished reading Second foundation yesterday and some very obvious errors in his writing caught my eyes.

Chapter 6 - One man, The mule and another - Mule suspects Channis to be a second foundationer and incapacitates him. When he comes to his senses : "It ended wth a cracking sensation that was like the jagged glare of a lightning flash, and Channis came slowly to earth while sight returned painfully in blurry transmission through tear-drenched eyes"

Chapter 18 -Ghost of a world - Arcadia has run away from Kalgan to her birthplace Trantor. Her emotions on reaching her birthplace "She had left, clangingly - running until her feet pounded softly on earth once more"

Chapter 18 -Ghost of a world - Arcadia is trying to persuade Preem Palver to go to war struck Terminus with food supplies - "The foundation traders in the old days used to do that all the time. There'd be war, so they'd sell whatever was needed bad and take their chances. Golly they use to make as much as two million dollars out of one trip - profit"

Chapter 21 -The answer that satisfied - Dr. Toran Darell uses the mind static device on Pelleas Anthor "with an unearthly shriek Pelleas Anthor sank to the floor"

While the use of words earth and unearthly can be attributed to the language per se (though I feel usage of term ground in first two instances and an adjective like eeire, ghostly or nightmarish would suit better). The usage of word dollars in chapter 18 however is totally incorrect as the foundationers used foundation credits as currency and not dollars.
